Water birth, offered by Christie Sheffer at Blue Columbine birth, gives the expectant mother the opportunity to labor and deliver in a warm, soothing pool of water in her own home. Water birth is one of the huge things that sets homebirth apart from the hospital. Water provides a calming and peaceful atmosphere at home which helps with relaxation and easing into the process of giving birth.
I find that using water for natural pain management is an invaluable tool. – Christie
The uterus is buoyant in water which releases pressure in the body during contractions. Another wonderful advantage of water birth is that it can actually speed up labor and delivery because the warm water helps the skin around the birth canal stretch and also increases blood flow throughout the body which will maximize all of those natural labor hormones being released. There are hospitals which will actually use water birth sometimes to help accelerate the labor process.
I have found that water birth can be helpful in preventing tears during pushing and crowning and the overall additional relaxation can help a mother for the largest parts of her labor. – Christie

Mom and baby become in sync with one another adding to the beauty and magic of the experience. When a baby is delivered into water, the transition from inutero to the outside world is less harsh. Imagine going from a warm, dark, soft space inside a sac of fluid to a cold, bright, dry environment.
Birthing in water offers the baby a more “fluid” transition into his/her new world.
Christie strongly believes that her role as your midwife is to encourage, advocate for, and assist you to listen to your body and move through each phase of labor as your body is telling you to do.
Laboring in a warm pool or bath helps clients relax physically, emotionally, and mentally. As the mind and body relax into the process of labor and delivery you will experience less pain and can more easily focus on the beautiful job you are doing.
As part of Columbine’s services, we provide a labor pool. At around 37 weeks we will bring your labor pool to your home so it can be ready and available quickly if need be. Clients provide a pool liner (easily purchased online), a hose and a faucet adapter.
Most of the time, the hose with adapter can easily fit on a sink or shower. In a pinch we can use the hot water heater.
We will bring a sump pump to drain the pool afterwards for an easy and quick breakdown.
